HOW DOES AUTOLOCK WORK?
The JLR Proximity Remote app runs silently in the background on your phone, looking for a Bluetooth low -energy (BLE) beacon that you leave in your vehicle. When the app "sees" the beacon, it starts monitoring the range to your vehicle automatically.

When you approach close enough to your vehicle (a configurable setting), the app sends a command via the InControl server to Unlock your vehicle. Once you enter your vehicle the app continues monitoring to see when you walk away - and sends the Lock command to your vehicle once you are certain distance away (a configurable setting). Once the BLE signal is lost (or you walk far enough away from the vehicle) the app resets are starts background monitoring again.

All this makes for an incredibly convenient experience, you don't need to remember to unlock or lock you vehicle. The door handles will extend (if so equipped), puddle lamps will appear and the vehicle lights will illuminate. Automatically.

The app uses sophisticated algorithms and techniques to turn the BLE signal into a reliable distance measurement. The recommended beacons can last for more than a year on a single battery, and the app uses a very minimal amount of battery power on your phone.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT KIND OF BEACON CAN I USE? AND WHERE DO I GET ONE?
Generally any small iBeacon compatible Bluetooth low-energy beacon will work.
These typically cost $10-$15 dollars (US) and can be sourced from vendors directly or from Amazon or other sources. Once you configure a beacon, place it your vehicle and forget about a year or more.
Please see the Bluetooth Beacons page for details.
SOMETIMES THE UNLOCK/LOCK TRIGGER NEVER OCCURS
The app uses an deterministic algorithm to decide on when to send commands, but in certain situations it may not trigger a command.
For example if you exit the vehicle and walk away it will lock, but if do not walk far enough away (so the beacon signal is lost) app will not enter the approach monitoring mode.
This can be accounted for using some configuration adjustments but there are some tradeoffs involved. See the App Configuration page for more details.
WHY DOES IT SOMETIMES TAKE SOME EXTRA TIME TO LOCK OR UNLOCKÂ THE DOORS?
Unfortunately due to the unpredictable speed of the InControl server and cellular communication system, there's no guarantee to how quickly the lock/unlock commands will reach your vehicle. In most cases it takes a few seconds, but if the connection is poor it can take longer.
THE APP CANNOT SEE MY BEACON AT ALL
Make sure you have enabled background location sharing (allow all the time) and make sure your ID1 (App Configuration) matches the UUID (beacon configuration).
THE BEACON DETECTION / TRIGGERS ONLY WORK WHEN THE PHONE IS UNLOCKED / APP IS OPEN
Be sure to turn off battery optimization (every device does this slightly differently) otherwise the app could be put to sleep when running in the background.
